A RARE 15th century gold ring, discovered by a metal detector in Redditch is estimated to sell for £4,000-6,000 in the fine jewellery sale, taking place on Wednesday, April 25 at the prestigious Bonhams auction house in London.

The gold marriage ring is engraved on the outside with the inscription ‘iea do re’ (Je adore), with each group of letters connected by double hearts and cross motifs.

Little is known about the original owner, the ring having lain undiscovered for more than 500 years. The ring was brought into the Bonhams Knowle office by the person who discovered it to be valued.

Jean Ghikha, director of the jewellery department for UK and Europe, said: “The Bonhams Knowle office holds regular valuation days and we are delighted to be able to offer this piece in our fine jewellery sale in London.

“Antique rings of this type are in high demand by International collectors.”
