FOLLOWING a major review of school funding Redditch MP Karen Lumley and Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid welcomed the news.

Both MPs are part of a campaign which is pressing for fairer funding for Worcestershire and, along with the six other Worcestershire MPs, have sent a letter to Michael Gove Secretary of State for Education.

The letter mentions the poor position of Worcestershire schools in relation to the national average but also in relation to neighbouring authorities.

It urges Mr Gove to realise the urgency of reforming the national funding formula, something mentioned in the review.

Mrs Lumley said that the review would be music to the ears of local schools.

“I have been calling for reforms long before I entered parliament and I am delighted that it has come one step closer,” she said.

“For too long schools in Worcestershire have suffered from an unfair funding formula that has only worsened over time.

“It is not fair that children in Redditch do not receive the same level of funding that children receive a few miles up the road.

“Teachers in Redditch do a great job with the resources they have but deserve, as do our young people, the very best we can give them.”

Other parts of the review included extra money for primary school places as well as money to repair school buildings.

Mrs Lumley added: “It is vital that we continue to speak out and speak loudly in favour of real reform, real fairness and a better deal for Worcestershire.”
