A PROFESSIONAL make-up artist from Bromsgrove is trying to highlight the opportunities for young people wanting to break into the industry, with a series of courses running at NEW College.

Karla Powell works freelance nationally as well as teaching full time at NEW College in Bromsgrove. She has worked at New York Fashion Week alongside artists and designers from Vera Wang to Rebecca Minkoff on make-up, hair and nails.

Now she wants to draw attention to the range of courses offered at NEW College incorporating make-up skills, which include Production Arts, Beauty Therapy and Art and Design.

She said: "It's kind've a quite hard industry to get into, so I want to show young make up artists how to get their name out there. You're more employable the more you can do.

Opportunities available at the college include the chance to work with special effects make up, wig making, body painting, and airbrushing.

Karla added: "You do need a bit of artistry especially if you want to do body painting. You've got to know how muscles work in the body and where creases fall on the eyes."

Students from the various courses have gone on work at the BBC, attend London Fashion Week and Clothes Show Live, and go into work in the theatre.

For more information on any of the course, or to talk to Karla directly about what's on offer, pop into NEW College, Bromsgrove, call the college on 01527 570020 and ask to speak to Karla, or email her at karlapowellmua@hotmail.co.uk.
