POLICE have issued a warning after a mobile phone scam was reported in the Redditch area at the end of last week.
A man alerted police on Friday, February 5 after he received a text that made him suspicious.
The text told him that if someone claiming to be an engineer called him, he should report it as it would be someone trying to access his SIM card. He was given what was supposed to be a crime prevention telephone number and was told he should call this, then select gate 90 or gate 09.
A police spokesman said: “Further investigation revealed that this was a scam and that if he had called the number then selected gate 90 or 09, he would have given the caller access to his mobile phone.
“We want to make people aware that this type of scam is operating and to encourage them to treat the content of any texts or calls of this nature with caution.”
Police also advise that people check their mobile phone bills and credit balances regularly so that any fraudulent use is noticed quickly.
