Redditch brothers enlist on same day

IT’S an unusual sight in an enlistment for two members of the same family standing side by side to pledge allegiance to Queen and country.

But that’s exactly what happened when brothers Lee, 19, and Kyle Cash, 17, from Redditch enlisted into the army on the same day. It was Kyle who made the decision to enquire about a career with the army. Having finished at Trinity High School, he chose to go into full time employment in the army, instead of going to college.

Lee, comments: “It was Kyle’s idea to join the Army and when he told me he was going to, I thought that it could be a good fit for me too. On top of that, our father was in the Army, so he was really supportive of our decision and put our mind at rest, that we were indeed making a good choice. “When I visited the recruitment office I was presented with such a wide range of careers, I was a bit spoilt for choice, but after discussing with the recruiters, I decided I wanted to join the Royal Army Medical Corps, as a medical technician.” Kyle, however, decided to follow in his father’s footsteps, by joining the Royal Engineers.

Lee added: “Now that we’ve pledged our oath, I’m really excited to get started. I’m going to miss my family and friends, but I can’t wait to start learning new skills.” The lads will now be going their separate ways, as Lee heads off to Surrey and Kyle to Cambridgeshire to start their first phase of training. Major Bob Bath, head of recruitment for the Redditch area, said: “It’s not every day we get two members of the same family enlisting into the army, so we were glad to welcome the lads to the team.
