AS part of the Geographical Association’s Awareness Week, Year 9 students at Trinity High School have been designing shanty town buildings that will withstand wind and rain.

On Monday, June 29, the students made their houses in a competition judged by the headteacher.

In lessons the students have been learning how shanty towns develop in parts of Africa, South America and Asia. They have seen how the buildings are made of any materials that can be found and are often erected by unskilled builders in often hazardous areas.

The students also had to make their houses out of waste materials that they have been collecting over time. Each house had to fit at least one person and be watertight.

Chris Duckett, geography teacher, said: “The students have found this project really interesting. By actually designing and building their own houses the issue has come alive. Students have had to work as teams, be creative and make decisions.”
