Axe falls on post offices

THE fate of two Redditch post offices targeted in the current Government cull is now known and the Mount Pleasant and Woodrow branches will be closed.

Following a six-week public consultation as part of a Government policy to reduce the number of post offices across the country, 54 branches will close in Herefordshire, Worcestershire and the West Midlands, and the two Redditch ones earmarked last month are scheduled to be gone by the end of this month.

George Atkinson, who led the campaign to keep Mount Pleasant open, was very disappointed about the decision.

“We felt we had a very good case,” he said.

“We had the backing of Jacqui Smith so they’ve gone against the Home Secretary’s advice but I’m sure the Post Office’s managing director Alan Cook will be on target for his bonus.

“I thought we were in with a good chance with all the support but this is the decision and there’s nothing we can do about it.”

He asked how long it would be before the performance of pillar boxes is measured and the Government decides to close them.

Former town mayor Madge Tillsley MBE, who joined the campaign to keep Mount Pleasant post office open, said she was disgusted with the decision.

“These bureaucrats do not care about the communities they operate in, only about profit margins.

“There’s three elderly people’s homes in the vicinity of Mount Pleasant and I think it’s disgusting they’re taking away this facility that was so valued by so many residents.

“Why invite people to take part in a consultation when the decision was already made?”

Redditch Conservative spokesman Karen Lumley said she was devastated that both branches are closing.

“It seems cynical that such a high profile campaign was made and the cuts still went through,” she said.

“We need to be aware that this may not be the end and other post masters may be looking over their shoulders too. I feel desperately sorry for the vulnerable people in the community and the fact that the elderly will have to travel some distance to the nearest post office is the biggest blow.”

Mark Partington, Post Office Ltd’s network development manager for Herefordshire, Worcestershire and the West Midlands, said he believed that the plan offers customers the best prospect for a sustainable network in the future.

Wake up George and the people of Redditch!
Jacqui Smith voted on both occasions to CLOSE ALL 2500 POST OFFICES!!!!!
Then she had the cheek to claim she had started a campaign / petition to save her own!
She blames the PO in her press release, but the PO were merely sent to do the governments dirty work.
It was a done deal before even the consulatation took place, only made possible by a hard core of Labour government MPs (of which Jacqui SMith was one), who put their partys plans above that of their constituents, pushing the leglislation through in Parliament.

How she had the nerve to campaign to save what she had voted twice in Parliament to axe, is beyond me!

Hi Helen, well said she voted on the closures of the post office just the same as Foster did. Yes Redditch wake up and smell the coffee.

Hi Helen, Hi John, found you. Just to support what you say. It was agreed by all Labour MPs that those with Post Offices destined for closure within their constituences would voice their support to keep them open within those constituences. However, it was official Labour Party and Government policy to close all those on the list, as you say Helen, 2,500 of them. There was a clash of "loyalties" here though, If Labour MPs voted to keep them open in line with what their electorate wanted, they would be going against what the Government wanted. So, what did our principled, loyal, Labour MPs do, why they supported the Government, opposed their constituents and Jaqui Smith, Michael Foster and every other Labour MP voted to close them.
With this duplicity, they then realised that they would be found out, so, what did they then do. Why, they would tell their constituents that they supported the retention of Post Offices in their own area but supported the closure of them in the areas of other Labour MPs.
The treachery of this plan can be seen quite easily, quite simply, no Post Office on the hit list stood an earthly chance of being kept open and the MP could not then be accused of disloyalty to his/her own constituents. This plan was disclosed the day after the vote was taken in some of the newspapers who were leaked it by some underhand means.
If the people of Redditch doubt this treachery on the part of their MP Jaqui Smith, they should confront her with it and ask her straight out what her tactics were. Essentially, if she tells the truth, she will say what I have said above. On this subject, Michael Foster, Labour MP for Worcester has been struck dumb because he has been found out and now refuses to comment on any aspect of Post Office closures.
Yes, people of Redditch, this was a dirty, deceitful, underhand business and the Labour MPs within Worcester were part and parcel of it. Jacqi Smith MP and Michael Foster MP wanted the Post Offices to close.

Hi Alan,
Jacqui Smith appeared in a photo in the Redditch press holding a placard with "Save our Post Office" on it, and also started a petition to do the same on her website, clearly blaming Post Office Ltd for the closures.
All of the govt MPs who voted for one thing in Parliament to keep their boss Mr Brown happy, and then professed the complete opposite opinion to their constituents are a disgrace as far as I am concerned. (and living in a town which has lost 5 of its Post Offices, especially Bengeworth which serves a large elderly community, and which we all fought tooth and nail to save on their behalf, makes me personally very angry).

But then, on top of voting for the closures, and then actively seeking local press coverage to falsely profess to Joe public (or is it Jacqui public)to be trying to save the very POs, is the absolute lowest of the low.

I am resident in Worcester, a friend of mine was so incensed on hearing about the Home Secretary's (Jaqui Smith) response to this issue that she sent an email to the Redditch MP asking for her comments re supporting the retention of her constituency Post Offices but voting to close them in the House of Commons vote.
I have just been out for a paper and popped in to my friend. I was shown an email in reply from Jaqui Smith. It was automated but conspicuously had information on it which it clearly indicated had been entered manually. The email said that Jaqui Smith did not respond to emails from outside her constituency and this issue should be directed at the local MP, in this case, Michael Foster, New Labour.
So, there we have it, she will not answer questions on matters within her constituency from people living outside it. A good "get-out" I think. Perhaps a local person may wish to ask Jaqui Smith what she has to say on this matter.

Hi again Alan.
There is a general rule which states that MPs do not communicate with each others constituents out of courtesy etc, but in this case, what Jacqui Smith did (or voted for) didn't just affect her own constituents, but everyone in our county. So I think she ought to explain to us all why she voted for one thing in Parliament, and then professed publicly the complete opposite to the very people she's supposed to represent. Ditto for any other MPs who did the same.
