A BUDDING young trainee mechanic from Redditch has proved he’s in the driving seat by winning Nationwide Autocentre’s first Apprentice of the Year award.
Ayaz Khalid, 19, is currently training at the Redditch ringway centre, and won the title from the MOT and car servicing specialist, where he is currently studying for his apprenticeship programme.
“The day was really tough but a lot of fun,” said Ayaz.
“I love being a mechanic and being picked as the first Apprentice of the Year is a real honour.
“It’s great to work for a company which recognises the talents of its team.”
Each apprentice was given a car and written brief and then had up to 45 minutes to ascertain the problem with the vehicle, finding the appropriate solution.
Some of the problems included stripping and rebuilding a gearbox and diagnosing a misfire.
Duncan Wilkes, CEO of Nationwide Autocentre, said: “Ayaz was a well deserved winner, he showed great flair for the job and it was clear he was performing well above the level he is currently at within the apprenticeship programme.”
Prizes included a complete Delphi DS100 diagnostic kit, alongside a host of tools and vouchers donated by Nationwide Autocentre.
