THE shadow leader of the House of Commons, Theresa May, visited Redditch to see a flat which showcases how technology can help older people to remain living in the comfort of their own homes.
The Telecare Assistive Technology show flat in Mendip House, Loxley Close, Church Hill, is equipped with the latest state-of-the-art aids and sensors for assisting independent living, including the Lifeline unit and pendant as well as movement, flood and extreme temperature sensors.
"It was very interesting," said Mrs May.
"It is good to help let people live independently.
"If they are in their own homes they often feel more comfortable because they have all their own things around them in a place they know.
"It is with this kind of technology that elderly people can feel less concerned about living on their own."
Redditch Conservative party spokesman, Karen Lumley, who invited Mrs May to visit the town, added: "I thought it was absolutely brilliant. Anything that can help people to stay in their home is a very good thing. The facilities are first class."
Both Worcestershire County Council and Worcestershire PCT have helped to finance the independent living project.
