Shoppers warned after purse thefts

3:41pm Monday 22nd October 2007

SHOPPERS have been warned to be vigilant after three thefts in Redditch town centre on Saturday, October 13.

A woman's handbag containing £80 cash was stolen in Sports World in the Kingfisher Centre at about 12.30pm while she helped her child try on shoes.

A woman's purse containing just under £50 cash was stolen from her handbag while she was also shopping in the Kingfisher Centre between 1.30-1.45pm.

And a woman's purse containing £75 was stolen from her handbag on the back of her grandson's pushchair while they were in the Macmillan charity shop, Unicorn Hill, at about 2.30pm.

Pc Fergus Green said: "These types of theft are rare but do tend to increase in the run-up to Christmas when shops are crowded and people tend to carry more money.

"Victims are often, but not always, elderly, and there are measures people can take to avoid becoming a victim.

"Shoppers should avoid carrying lots of cash and never keep PIN numbers with bank cards.

"They should be particularly careful if someone tries to distract them, engage them in conversation, or brushes against them.

"Shoppers should consider keeping the purse or wallet in an inside coat pocket or bum bag around the waist with the bag at the front, rather than a handbag.

"If a handbag is used, keep it firmly fastened and push the purse to the bottom of the bag or place it in an inner compartment every time it's used."

He also recommended not leaving bags on trolleys on pushchairs, being careful when trying on clothes or shoes and being vigilant in cafes and restaurants.

Police officers and CSOs will be carrying out high profile town centre patrols leading up to Christmas and working closely with shop staff and CCTV operators.

Witnesses or anyone with information should call Redditch Police on 08457 444888 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
