SCORCHING temperatures in Redditch this week have caused some of the town's road surfaces to start to melt.

Worcestershire County Councils has already sent gritters to treat three roads in Redditch, including Beoley Lane, Green Sward Lane and Feckenham Road.

Cobley Hill in Alvechurch and Corsey Lane in Wythall were also covered with either viasealer - a surface dressing patching material - or by hand-dusting.

Jon Fraser, from Worcestershire County Council Highways, said: "We've seen very high temperatures this week and it is affecting the surface of around 20 roads across the county.

"We have robust plans in place for when we experience hot temperatures over a long period of time."

The county saw the hottest temperatures of the year this week for four days running, with the heatwave set to cool slightly this weekend.

Known as 'fatting up', the hot weather causes bitumen in the roads to rise to the surface, making the roads more slippery.
