AN event which showcases the support which is available for people with mental health issues is being opened to the public for the first time in five years.

As part of the national Time to Talk Day, the event will see a host of local groups and organisations coming together to encourage a discussion about mental health.

Supporters include the blue light services, charities, well-being groups and support organisations including Rethink Mental Illness, online advocacy , Priory Group, MIND plus taster treatments from Tan and Glam.

Redditch Borough Council’s Unison Branch Secretary, Laney Walsh, who is running the event said: “Time to Talk Day is a reminder to us all that mental health is not something to be embarrassed about – it is here and we need to deal with it, not hide from it.

“Staff have found this event to be really useful over the last five years and it seems only right that the immense amount of support and advice which is on offer throughout the borough, and beyond, is showcased and is accessible to everyone."

A nationwide campaign, it’s part of the Time to Change social movement run by charities MIND and Rethink Mental Illness, and similar events are taking place across the country on February 1, which is Time To Talk Day 2018.

Councillor Joe Baker, who is responsible for community safety, said: “We have some brilliant groups and organisations who are giving their time to support this free event and I am delighted that our own residents can access these. It’s definitely time to talk about mental health and to change attitudes towards it too.

“We want to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and I hope as many people take the opportunity to find out more about the support on offer at this free event.”

The event runs from 10am until 2pm at Redditch Town Hall on February 1.
