AVECHURCH boss Ian Long asked for a reaction from his players following the midweek defeat against Corby and they responded with a 2-1 win over Chasetown - but they left it late.

Josh March struck with a 91st minute winner to seal the points after the Church were forced to come from behind.

Willie Whieldon had given Chasetown a 15th minute lead while Church suffered a series of close calls, with March hitting the crossbar and then having another goalbound effort cleared off the line.

Church eventually levelled on 71 minutes when central defender Jamie Willetts headed home after Chasetown struggled to clear a Tom Turton free kick.

Chasetown were punished further when Jamie Ashmore played a ball over the top for March to chase and convert.

Long admitted: "It was just grateful to get the points in the end which keeps us in the Evo-Stik Division One South play-off places.

"We deserved to get the points following our second half display - but we weren't at the races for the first.

"We're good for 45 minutes but I can't seem to get a 90 minute performance out of the players at the moment.

"I was delighted Josh March got on the scoresheet. He suffered something of a goal drought recently and gone through a bit of a barren spell. But he certainly came up trumps against Chasetown."

Church are set to hit the road for the remainder of October, starting with a trip to Belper Town this Saturday.

That is followed with a journey to Peterborough Sports before they head to Cambridge City in the FA Trophy.

Long has been forced to rule out recent signing from Lye Town Alex Dallinson through injury while Jack Cresswell is taking a break from football.

But Ryan Winwood has returned to full training following injury while Long has brought midfield man Sam Williams back to the club.

Williams previously played for Long at Tividale and has most recently appeared for Walsall Wood, but hasn't featured at all for the past 12 months.

Long confirmed: " Sam is miles away from full fitness at the moment and I might consider sending him out on loan to get some games under his belt."

Busy Long is also running the rule over youth team striker Ben Tilbury who was due to feature against Stourbridge this week in the Integro League Cup.
