A REDDITCH charity says it has the answer to eradicating homelessness - with an innovative solution believed to be the first of its kind in the world.

Homeless Foundation, based on Evesham Street, is looking to bring its micro homes to the town.

The 'iKozie Micro-Home', which measures 186 sq ft, boasts a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and even an entertainment zone.

They are inexpensive to build and can be stacked on top of each other to create a bigger community.

Shallow foundations mean they also work well on Brownfield sites.

The aim is to provide temporary accommodation to one homeless person.

The charity recently set up Britain’s first ever micro home in the garden of a house in Worcester.

Redditch Advertiser:

Now charity trustee Kieran O’Donnell is eager to see the ambitious project roll out, starting with Redditch.

“We believe this is a future answer to homelessness," he said.

“We think we have designed something pretty unique, the first of its kind in the world.

“We are actively looking for sites for more micro homes and would be happy to talk to Redditch Borough Council about any sites they may be able to offer.

“We were lucky to own the land where the iKozie is located in Worcester and site costs would need to be funded for future developments.”

The charity, which has been based in Redditch since launching in 2007, also offers grants to homeless people and works with charities to help people find accommodation.

The Homeless Foundation is marking a year this September since it launched hihomie.org – a website providing advice to young people at risk of homelessness.

Mr O’Donnell added: “Young people do not go into a centre to ask for advice – they will click online.

“We found there is very little done on preventing homelessness in young people which is why we developed this help and advice service.”
