A MOTHER and daughter promoting differences and disabilities through a series of books are set to release their third book.

Jess Hiles, of Redditch, used her childhood drawings as a basis for Jess The Goth Fairy, a series of books teaching youngsters that it is okay to be different.

Having released two books and toured the country speaking at literary festivals and schools, Jess and her mother, Jo Allmond, are now releasing their third book - She’s Still My Nan.

The book is influenced by Jess’ grandmother’s battle with dementia.

Jo said: "This is our third book and very special to us. Jess's nan passed away after suffering from dementia in March.

"Jess had found watching her nan struggling with this awful disease hard, and it was after we had attended a meeting at the Macintyre, a charity who provide brilliant care nationally for people such as Jess.

"They have a dementia group which is helping raise the awareness of people with disabilities now being diagnosed with dementia to get the correct diagnosis and support.

"We have become involved with the group and after a meeting last year we decided to write our next book about Jess's nan."

She added: "Through these meetings and writing this book it helped both of us come to terms with what was happening to my mum.

"So it is the story of our little fairy visiting her nan and with the help of Dr Paul the lovely badger who looks after her nan, Jess realises that though her nan is different because of the disease she is still her nan inside."

The tales are brought to life by illustrator Emily Daly and the pair already have around 10 books planned, each focusing on a different aspect of disability or difference.

The fairy character and the message behind the books are inspired by Jess, who has learning and physical disabilities and lives independently in Redditch - teaching sign language, fundraising for national charity Macintyre and working at Where Next, as well as being part of Redditch Special Olympics and a National Special Olympics gold medal winner.

The pair will be holding a book signing in Waterstones in Redditch on August 19 from 2pm to 4pm.
