REDDITCH is set to mark the first anniversary of the death of murdered MP Jo Cox.

Residents are being encouraged to attend The Great Get Together on Headless Cross Community Orchard this Saturday, June 17.

The feel good event, which is part of a UK wide initiative, aims to bring together people of different faiths and backgrounds in celebration of Jo Cox's belief that we have more in common than that which divides us.

There will be games, a picnic and be an opportunity to share food and show solidarity.

Alistair Waugh, of Headless Cross Community Orchard, said: "This is local, but we’re part of a big thing. We’re joining thousands of people up and down the UK in hosting a great get together, a simple act of community, friendship and fun.

"We want to bring the community together to celebrate what unites us. We’ll provide shelter, games and fun. We’re keen to encourage people to strike up conversations with someone they don’t yet know. So bring smiles, food and good cheer."

The event will run from noon to 3pm.

Batley and Spen Labour MP Jo Cox died after being shot and stabbed multiple times by Thomas Mair in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

The Great Get Together initiative was created by Jo Cox’s family, and is backed by comedian Eddie Izzard and more than 100 organisations. Communities across the UK people are organising hundreds of street parties, picnics, lunches and iftars.
