THOUSANDS of people are expected to flock to Alcester this weekend for the town’s annual street market.

The event, which has previously attracted more than 10,000 visitors to the market town, will have the theme superheroes and supervillains.

There will be a fancy dress competition at 12.15pm, followed by a parade at 12.45, and prizes for the best-dressed stall and shop window.

The judging will take place at Bleachfield Street car park.

A range of stalls set up by local organisations, societies and clubs will take over the town centre and acts, including Alcester Rock Academy and Alcester Silver Victoria Band, will perform throughout the day.

High Bailiff Ian Whitehead said: "We are encouraging everybody to join in and get dressed up with the theme superheroes and supervillains. We want as many people are possible taking part. The event is great Alcester tradition that goes back many years."

He added: "We are expecting a similar turnout to previous years."

The annual event is put on by the court leet to raise money for the High Bailiff's charity fund.

The market officially opens at 1pm on Sunday, June 11.

Road closures will be in operation between 10am and 7.30pm on High Street, Church Street and Henley Street.
