RETAIL giant Argos is set to close its Redditch town centre branch on Friday.

But all staff at the Kingfisher Shopping Centre branch have been offered alternative jobs in the company’s stores.

A spokesperson for Kingfisher Shopping Centre described the announcement as "disappointing" but not "unexpected".

They said: "Following the merger between Sainsbury’s and Home Retail Group, Argos is reviewing and consolidating its store portfolio nationally and has notified us it will not be renewing its lease at the Kingfisher Shopping Centre.

"Negotiations with Argos have been ongoing for some time and whilst disappointing this news it is not unexpected in context with the group’s property strategy. We are already in discussions with a number of retailers interested in opening at the Kingfisher Shopping Centre, which will complement the recent lettings agreed with 360 Play, Footasylum, Savers and Coffee #1."

An Argos spokesman confirmed the news.

They added: "We have supported all colleagues in finding them alternative roles at neighbouring Argos stores."

Shoppers have been advised their nearest store is less than two miles away at Abbey Retail Park on Alvechurch Highway.
