HUNDREDS of people have paid heartfelt tributes to community hero Lennox Cumberbatch who died on Friday, after losing his battle against cancer.

Cllr Cumberbatch, aged 76, who became the first councillor this century to serve two consecutive terms (2011 and 2012) as Alcester’s mayor, died on Friday after a long fight against the disease.

Speaking to the Advertiser, current town mayor, Professor Chris Brannigan, described Lennox as "immensely influential" on Alcester Town Council.

Born in Georgetown, Guyana, the former health care manager and senior local government officer moved to Alcester in 2001 after living in Wales and other parts of England.

Cllr Brannigan said: "The town of Alcester is mourning the death of one of its favourite citizens.

"Lennox came to live in Alcester in 2001, although for many people it seems as though his contribution to the town has spanned decades.

"He quickly became involved in the town.
"He was a major mover in getting the health centre in Alcester on the old hospital site, perhaps not surprising considering his career in health care and local government.

"He worked with others to secure a grant from Warwickshire County Council, for a co-ordinator for older people.

"Lennox was also instrumental in establishing the Alcester Community Trust.

"He was still making a significant contribution days before his death.

"He leaves many legacies to the town.

"He seemed as proud of his adopted home town as the town was of him."

Lennox was a member of the Community Care Committee as well as chairman of both the council-led Alcester Community Trust Committee and Alcester Shadow Health and Wellbeing Board.

Following news of his death, residents took to Facebook to pay their respects to the popular resident with many describing him as "lovely" and a "gentleman".

Nina Knapman, who served 12 years on Alcester Town Council, said: "So many people will find this news hard to bear, let alone how the family must be feeling.

"Words are totally inadequate to offer them any comfort.

"But for what they are worth, may you all find the strength to get through the next few weeks and then some release and peace in the knowledge of a life well lived and admired."

On Friday, December 16 at Alcester’s awards evening, Lennox was announced as 2016 Alcester Citizen of the Year and in response he stood and gave a moving speech to the audience.

Previously, on the Alcester Town Council website, Lennox wrote: "What I like most about Alcester is the good atmosphere, friendly people and pleasant surroundings.

"I joined Alcester Town Council to contribute towards the general development of the town and to work with others in the improvement of the health and social care of the residents of Alcester."

The Manchester United fan, who also enjoyed golfing, leaves behind wife Kath and his two children David and Suzanne.
