MORE than 150 people turned out for a Halloween- themed fun run in memory of a much-loved Redditch Lion.

The run, held over the weekend in Arrow Valley Country Park, raised more than £1,000 for Prostate Cancer UK and the Rory the Robot Surgical Appeal, and honoured the event's brainchild and organiser Phil Barton who recently died from a heart attack.

The 64-year-old collapsed suddenly at work and died on Thursday September 15.

Many people donned Halloween Costumes to take on the 2.5km and 5km circuits, pushing buggies, wheelchairs or walking dogs.

After a communal warm-up session for the participants, the run was set off Redditch Mayor Mayor Joe Baker.

In the 5km race, Peter Dunton and Tasmeen Ahmed were named first man and woman to complete the course.

Certificates were awarded to everyone who took part, and prizes were offered for the best Halloween costumes.

Brian Rich, from Redditch Lions, said: "Phil Barton would be chuffed to bits.

"Yesterday's run was a great success, and I hope everyone who took part had as much fun as we did on the day.

"A significant amount was raised by the participants and sponsors for the two charities we are supporting.

"We’re already looking forward to organising the Halloween Fun Run in 2017, and hope to see everyone - and all their friends - next year."

Mr Barton set up the fun run three years ago to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer and to raise funds towards prevention and curing the disease.

The Rory The Robot Surgical Appeal, is aiming to £1.6million to fund surgical equipment to treat prostate cancer at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.
