A REDDITCH roofer who grabbed a young woman in the multi-storey block of flats where they lived has escaped jail after admitting attempted kidnap.

Azizur Pagan, aged 37, also pleaded guilty to assaulting Emma Goodwin, who screamed and fought him off, said prosecutor Simon Warlock.

She escaped with bruising to her head and neck.

Pagan, of Donnington Close, Church Hill South, was given a 12-month jail sentence suspended for two years at Worcester Crown Court.

He was also ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work and undertake 30 days rehabilitation with the probation service.

Mr Warlock said Miss Goodwin was attacked after she let a guest out of the front door of the block at 11.20pm on April 24, 2015.

She was grabbed on the way back to her room.

Police attended in 16 minutes and Pagan complained about the smell of drugs.

He alleged that the woman had been "tripping" and he felt threatened.

Mr Warlock said Pagan was involved in an incident with a former partner in 2013.

He questioned her about wearing a mini-dress and the argument led to violence and her being pushed down a flight of stairs.

Jason Aris, mitigating, submitted 12 references.

He did not object to Recorder Roger Evans making a 12-month restraining order against Pagan to prevent his contact with Miss Goodwin.
