ALCESTER MP Nadhim Zahawi has been forced to backtrack on his support of Boris Johnson as the next Prime Minster after the former mayor ruled himself out of the Conservative leadership race.

In a speech today (Thursday, June 30), Mr Johnson said he did not believe he could provide the leadership or unity required.

Previously, Mr Zahawi had thrown his weight behind Mr Johnson.

Speaking yesterday, he said: "As someone with a commitment to securing the legacy of the last Prime Minister and an ability to relate to and engage with people from all walks of life - I believe that Boris Johnson is the right candidate and prioritising the improvement of life chances for everyone."

Following today's announcement, Mr Zahawi issued a new statement.

He said: "Having worked with Boris closely over the last few months, I believed that he would be the best option for our next leader.

"Unfortunately, he came to the view that he could not be the candidate to bring the country back together, and took the step of removing himself from the race with honour and dignity.

"I will now speak to every candidate and support whoever is best placed to negotiate our new relationship with the EU, while uniting our country and prioritising the improvement of life chances for everyone."
