THE furious mother of a learner driver has lashed out at "ridiculous" waiting times at Redditch Test Centre after being told her daughter may wait up to four months for an exam.

After waiting two months for a retest, Aimee Taylor received an email from the DVSA on Monday, June 13 cancelling her exam, due to take place last Friday.

The 17-year-old was told her driving examiner was no longer available and she would have to wait until Friday, August 9 for another test- bringing her total waiting time to about four months, unless she could find a cancellation by continually checking the government website.

Her mother Nikki Taylor described the system as "crazy" and "inefficient" and said when she asked for Aimee’s test to be prioritised, as someone who has waited the longest, she was directed back to the website.

"She (Aimee) is so angry," Ms Taylor said.

"It’s very unfair - these are ridiculous waiting times for driving tests. We’ve checked other test centres and Bromsgrove is even worse – there are no dates available whatsoever.

"The fact she has to wait another two months or keep checking the website for if there is a cancellation is just ludicrous.

"Even if we get a cancellation, we will need to check her instructor is available or we are back to square one.

"Potentially this could be ongoing and they could cancel again in August for no good reason.

"She now has to pay another two months of insurance as a learner on her car and lessons so she doesn't pick up any bad habits.

"At least she has her own car to practice in, other people don't

"She has already booked the day off work and she may have to take it regardless.

"You can’t even book additional tests as a backup, in case of failure or cancellation, as the system won’t allow more than one test to be booked for each applicant," she added.

DVSA head of operations Phil Lloyd said: "DVSA conducts over 1.7 million car practical driving tests each year and only a small number of these are cancelled by the agency.

"We recognise that short notice cancellations are very disappointing for our customers and work to ensure that tests can go ahead wherever possible.

"The increase in demand for driving tests is continuing, and we acknowledge that waiting times are currently higher than we would like in some of our locations.

"We are working to address this as quickly as possible and will continue with further examiner recruitment campaigns throughout 2016."
