REDDITCH MP Karen Lumley recently presented the awards at Special Olympics Redditch’s annual awards celebration at Redditch Town Hall.

The MP, patron to Special Olympics Redditch, joined Pattie Hill, Mayor of Redditch, councillor Joe baker deputy mayor, and Bill Hartnett leader of Redditch council, to give out participation awards to some 30 athletes, all aged between five and 50, in recognition of what they have achieved, either in training or generally in competitions, throughout the year.

It was also the first year of YAP (Young Athlete Program) awards for those aged two to 10-years-old awards.

“This is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the year," she said.

"These are people - all of whom are heroes in their own right - who have battled through their disabilities to show what they can really do. I really enjoyed the evening.”

Councillor Hartnett said: "This is always a great night and great start to the year I was particularly pleased and proud to be asked to present the awards to the winners in the young athlete program it was a joy to see the faces of the young athletes and the parents, I am always amazed how many activities and competitions special Olympics Redditch participate in during the year."

Ron Daykin, from the group, which is an accredited branch of Special Olympics GB, added: “The evening proved to be very rewarding for all athletes and volunteers as well as their families and carers who were also present."
