COMEDIAN Ruby Wax will take centre stage at Redditch's Palace Theatre later this month as she showcases her one-woman show based on her book Sane New World: Taming the Mind.

Using her signature humour, Ruby, author of the Sunday Times bestseller, will be giving the audience a tour of the brain and how to tame it.

Advertiser reporter Liz Sharpe caught up with the actress and mental health campaigner.

The show, and the book, uses Ruby’s recently acquired knowledge from a master’s degree in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy at Oxford University to explore the burdens of 21st-century living.

"We know so much about how the world works- but so little about our how our own minds work," the comedian said.

"It’s like having a Ferrari on top of your head but no one gave you the keys. We are not equipped for this century, it’s too hard, too fast, and too full of fear; we just don’t have the bandwidth.

"Our brains can’t take so much information in a world where we’re bombarded by bad news and force-fed information.”

She describes the second half of her show as more interactive, inviting the audiences to get involved.

"I don't pick on people," she added.

Speaking on advice for those struggling mentally, Ruby said: "Never doubt yourself. It is never your imagination if it is difficult- take it seriously, just think is this going to go away?

"If it’s not going to go away, tackle it."

Away from the book and the show, in the 80s, Ruby starred in the all-girl British sitcom Girls on Top, which she agreed was ground-breaking at the time.

“We were the only funny girls about,” she explained.

The sitcom, which focused on five young women, including a radically feminist character, received positive reviews.

When asked if she considers herself a feminist, she said: “I’m not political, but if you ask me if it’s fair -I would say no.”

When asked if her family think she is as funny as she is on stage, she said: “They think I am even funnier.”

Ruby, who describes her show as very funny and interesting, will be making a reappearance at Palace on Thursday, October 29 at 7.30pm.

To book tickets, priced at £20.75, call the box office on 01527 65203 or visit redditchpalacetheatre.co.uk.

Ruby is set to release a brand new book, A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled, in January next year.
