PEOPLE from the Caribbean community are being invited to celebrate Emancipation Day, a public holiday in Jamaica.
The event, on Saturday, August 1, celebrates a new beginning when slaves were freed in Jamaica - on August 1 in 1838.
To celebrate this day everyone is being asked to come out in their Jamaican colours with flags and enjoy some traditional food.
The drop-in style event is at the Warwick Arms on Ipsley Street from 1pm.
Veronica Allen, former community leader of Caribbean Roots, who is visiting from Jamaica said: "This is a great time for the community to come together and also the opportunity to meet up with old friends.
"Everyone is welcome. I believe it's important that we keep our culture and heritage alive."
She added: "We trust it will be a great day and the sun will shine to make it a fun day in the sun."
