ELECTION candidates for Stratford-on-Avon attended a mock hustings event at Alcester Grammar School.

Students turned out in force to the event, which gave them the opportunity to put several questions to candidates about topics including, the democratic system, education funding and past mishandling of both the NHS and the economy.

Students also asked why inner city students bring more funding to schools than students in Warwickshire and if they could trust the candidates.

Each candidate was allocated two minutes for a response and each started with an introduction outlining their main priorities.

Elizabeth Adams, Stratford Liberal Democrats prospective parliamentary candidate, outlined her plan to fight for families’ future and youth involvement in politics.

Edward Fila, Stratford UKIP prospective parliamentary candidate, said Britain needs to escape the unsustainable and undemocratic system of Brussels and highlighted the UK’s ability to negotiate trade deals without the European Union.

Both, Stratford Labour prospective parliamentary candidate, Jeff Kenner and Dom Giles, Stratford Green Party prospective parliamentary candidate, focused on society’s inequality and fairer funding for education in rural areas.

The past MP for Stratford, Conservative candidate Nadhim Zahawi, focused on the welfare reform and said Britain was a country of freedom and opportunity.

Mr Zahawi pledged that the Conservatives will deliver £8 billion per year to the NHS by 2020 and told spectators to judge the party by their track record.

Ms Adams responded to the question concerning the previous mishandling of the NHS and the economy by stating that her party’s policies are based on evidence, as opposed to those of Labour and the Conservatives, which she described as ideological.

Mr Zahawi told students of his party’s dedication to a creation of a “fairer funding formula” and Elizabeth Adams argued for higher wages for “all education staff.”

All candidates agreed to some extent a reform of the democratic system was necessary.

Jeff Kenner and Dom Giles argued for the lowering of the voting age to 16 and Edward Fila asked for the eradication of the first past the post system.

The mock hustings event was held on Tuesday, March 14.
