THE deadline for Malvern's Beacon Shining Light Awards has been extended until November 14 so that even more entries can be taken.

The awards are a way of saying thank you to a local hero who goes that extra mile for others without seeking any reward for themselves. Nominations have come from charities who want to thank their volunteers as well as members of the public who want to thank someone for helping beyond the call of duty.

Local businesses can get involved by offering to donate a prize to the winners. The awards are being run by award winning Malvern dental practice Beacon DentalCare, with the help of events organiser Wendy Marsden.

They are being judged by radio personality Helen Wheels, from Free Radio's breakfast show, Emma Phillpott from Key IQ, Malvern, and Paul Farrer, TV producer and composer, as well as John Wilson, editor of the Malvern Gazette.

Karen Sutton, co-owner of Beacon DentalCare, said: ‘I so grateful that these very busy local celebrities have offered their time to help judge the awards. It is so fabulous to see how the whole community can pull together to thank those amongst us who give to others."

Nominations can be made in the following categories: family and community, health and youth health, social care, animals and environment and education
