ALCESTER Musical Theatre Company will celebrate its 50th Anniversary by performing The Full Monty at Redditch's Palace Theatre.

Around 30 group members will take to the stage for the show which will run from Tuesday, October 7 to Saturday, October 11.

The performance will be raise money for prostate cancer, the most common cause of cancer in men, by selling calendars of the theatre company actors for £5 on the door.

Following the success of their first The Full Monty, around four to five years ago, the society received many requests to perform the show again.

David Hill, publicity manager, said: “We thought the play is very much about men so we ought to try to choose a men’s charity.

“It is quite a modern musical and we do find that people tend to prefer the more modern than the Gilbert and Sullivan.

“People have been asking to bring it back- we have had people going in the Palace Theatre asking when the Full Monty would be coming back.”

The musical, which comprises songs, comedy, music and laughter, follows six unemployed male steelworkers, who decide to strip to make some money, but unlike regular acts they decide to bare all.

During the play, the men have to battle their own insecurities and overcome fears and self-consciousness before they finally reach the stage.

Cynthia Hill, who has been part of the group since it began, will play Nathan’s mother in the play.

She said: “It is not just about men getting naked. Having read the script I am all for it.

“It is a family group, everyone works with each other and it keeps me going.”

The youngest performer will be, Billy Vale, who will take on the role of Nathan.

Although the show aims to attract audiences of all ages it does contain some nudity and strong language.

During the Saturday matinee performance there will be a trained signer for the hearing impaired.

Tickets cost between £11.75 to £14.75 per person to book contact the Palace Theatre box office on 01527 65203.

Next year the theatre group, which used to be known as Alcester Operatic Society, will be performing Hairspray at the Palace Theatre.
