A GROUP of Girl Guides tried their hand at bricklaying during a visit to David Wilson Homes Mercia’s Enfield Gardens development in Redditch recently.

The girls, aged 10 and 11, from 1st Woodrow Guides, toured the development on Harris Close, and learnt about the different build stages, roles of everyone on site and the prospects of entering the construction industry when they are older. They finished off the day with a bricklaying and electrics workshop.

Unit leader Gemma Bretherton helped arrange the visit as she is also the sales adviser at Enfield Gardens. She has been involved with Girlguiding since the age of five, now volunteering her time to an organisation she is very close to.

The unit leader said: “Girlguiding aims to give girls in the UK the opportunity to experience as many things as possible that they may not otherwise get to do. The visit to a building site was a first for all the girls and they enjoyed seeing how things work behind the scenes. They particularly enjoyed having a go at bricklaying.”

“Women are generally underrepresented in construction so I hope the visit has whetted their appetite and they can one day be building the homes of the future.”
