REDDITCH MP Karen Lumley took time recently to visit Arrow Valley Lake to meet Astwood Bank Angling Club member John Bushell, to learn more about the joys of fishing during this year’s National Fishing Month.

This event runs until August 31 2014 and is organised and led by the Angling Trades Association (nationalfishingmonth.com).

Mrs Lumley is keen to remind her constituents that everyone can enjoy this pastime which, unlike many sports that rely on specialist skills such as speed and agility, an eye for a ball or a good sense of timing, just needs patience.

It is a flexible pastime that can be enjoyed alone, with friends or in an organised group for an hour or two or for a whole day in all weathers.

Mrs Lumley said: "I was pleased to meet with John and get a better understanding of why so many people from all walks of life enjoy fishing. I even had a go myself and was thrilled that I managed to catch a fish.

"I think it is important that people are encouraged to take part in outdoor activities and get to enjoy our outside spaces in different ways.

"It is extremely disappointing that during such a prestigious month in the angling community, thieves violated the Lodge Pool and caused so much damage. The knock-on effect of their selfish actions are huge and costly. I sincerely hope that those involved are identified and brought to justice promptly as such actions must not go unpunished.

"I hope that this does not discourage people from trying this fun and peaceful activity."
