REDDITCH Council is now flying a fabulous flag at the town hall thanks to a generous local business.

When Simon Thomas, MD at Thomas Brothers Funeral Directors, spotted that the council’s Union Flag was looking a tad tired and tatty, he decided his company would fund a new one.

He was inspired by the fact it is the 100th year anniversary of World War, his three brothers, Mark, Ben and Ceri are all former Royal Marines, and he wanted Redditch to fly a flag to be proud of.

Mr Thomas said: “I know the council is strapped for cash but I couldn’t drive by and see the flag looking tired and shabby, especially in such an important year.

“I run a local business in this town and I am proud to be a part of Redditch so I am more than happy to do my bit to see the borough flourish.

The new flag was hoisted by the Mayor Cllr Pat Witherspoon and Mr Thomas attended was invited to see the donated flag hoisted into the air. Also at the event was Second World War veteran Sid Reynolds from the town’s Royal British Legion who celebrates his 90th birthday this week.

Cllr Witherspoon said: “The council is very proud of its armed forces, past and present, and this is a very generous gesture which will see us mark this important year in style.”
