DESPITE Astwood Bank Carnival being a huge success there are warnings that it could have been the very last one.

The much loved event, which took place over the weekend at SE Davis in Edgioake Lane, was attended by hundreds of people but due to a lack of volunteers helping to run the event it may not return.

Chairman of the Carnival Committee Jenny Lightfoot said that unless more people volunteered to help hold the carnival event next year this may well have been the last ever one.

She pleaded for anyone who thinks they can help at next year’s event, or other events held throughout the year, to get in touch.

"There are a whole host of jobs that need doing with varying amounts of time needed for them," she said.

This year saw the return of a Friday night event - a race night in the marquee in the carnival field at SE Davis.

It managed to raise more than £800 on the night.

The main event saw the carnival field busy from 8am until 8pm with floats being prepared and beer tents being stocked.

The procession of floats, on lorries donated by Allelys, set off from SE Davis at noon and was led by the carnival royalty being transported in a horse and carriage, with Redditch Mayor Pat Witherspoon and town MP Karen Lumley following in their limousine, provided by Thomas Brothers.

The procession wound its way around the streets of Astwood Bank with large crowds and marching bands and walking groups before returning to the field just before 2pm for displays by West Mercia Police, Crossfit Trainers group and a number of up-and-coming local bands such as The Callout.

The winner of this year’s best carnival float was Astwood Bank toddler group and the winner of the best walking group was Astwood Bank First School.

Astwood Bank First School was chosen as the overall best in show winners.

Best dressed property winner went to 11 High Street, and the winner of the business category was Knights Pharmacy.
