CRABBS Cross Academy in Redditch have marked the opening of their new school library with a reading initiative for the students.

Classes joined the ‘Racing Readers’ competition with a racing track on display where the pupils recorded all the books they’d read.

Every time a book was finished, a car raced along the track with all the children aiming to 30 books each to help their cars reach the finish line.

A spokesman from Crabbs Cross Academy, said: “The purpose of this initiative was to encourage the children to be reading regularly, whilst also developing their love of reading. The children have really enjoyed checking their progress on the racing tracks and over taking class mates in their bid to reach the finish line.”

At the end of the ‘race’ all the children who had passed the finish line were rewarded by having their names entered into a prize draw to win a Kindle e-book reader, and six-year-old Ashleigh Power came away the winner of her very own Kindle.
