A BATCHLEY community group is launching a new project aimed at getting more people gardening.

Growing Batchley, led by Batchley Support Group, will work with people of all ages to brighten the local area and support older and disabled residents to maintain their gardens.

With funding from the People's Health Trust for the next two years, the project is looking to grow interest in gardening and nurture enthusiasm to keep Batchley beautiful.

Residents can even benefit from a tool hire scheme to help maintain their own gardens.

Community gardener Alistair Waugh said: "You don't need green-fingers to join us, just a heap of interest to keep Batchley beautiful and carry on gardening.

"We're going to bring together working groups to tidy gardens and grow fruit and vegetables, and we're keen to support people to maintain their own gardens through the tool-hire scheme.

"If you fancy lending a hand to do some gardening or know of an elderly friend in Batchley who would benefit from help in the garden, then just get in touch."

The project kicks-off this month with a sunflower growing competition and apple juicing session for youngsters on Thursday, May 22 at Batchley Support Group at 21 Salters Lane, but the project is open to everyone.
