THIS year's Federation of Small Businesses Business Scholarship has been awarded to a Redditch student with an eye for a good deal.

Katie Styler, who joined the University of Worcester’s business management course straight from Trinity High School in Redditch two years ago, has developed a particular interest in what makes a business tick.

She said: “I began to notice that some businesses grew, whilst others didn’t and some actually ceased trading. What makes that happen? How come one goes on to be a household name and another disappears completely?

"When I have gained the qualifications and experience needed I would like to work to help people improve their businesses, taking them to the next level and ongoing success.

“But that’s some way in the future; currently I’m enjoying a year in industry as part of my course; working in the export office at the Redditch based sea food processing company, Seafarms Ltd.”

Katie says that, whilst all of her family have supported her throughout her studies, it is her father that she owes the most to.

“My dad has worked really hard all of his life, starting as an engineering apprentice and now heading a division at a local manufacturing company. That sort of commitment and hard work has taught me a great deal,” she added.

The FSB Business Scholarship is presented annually to a student that has shown particular initiative, skill and dedication to both their studies and developing their own entrepreneurial skills.

The prize includes £1,000 to develop the winner’s own business idea or career prospects and Katie says that she will bank the money until she is at the right stage to use it.
