A REDDITCH gym is offering a special mother and daughter membership package, to help tackle the rising problem of teenage obesity.

Obesity among adolescents is common in the UK, with around one in five 11-15 year olds being significantly overweight. The statistics come from the official National Child Measurement Programme.

Girls are particularly at risk of being overweight as they move through the teenage years - a time when they typically become less active. This fact inspired Gymophobics, a ladies only gym, to create a tempting offer for mums who join with their daughters. As well as no men at the gym, Gymophobics steers clear of loud music and mirrors so that female members, who don’t like some of the intimidating aspects of traditional unisex gyms, feel more comfortable.

The new mother and daughter package offers a reduced membership rate and those who join before May 18 will be entered into monthly prize draws.

At the end of three months all those taking part will be fully assessed and the pair who have made the greatest achievement will win a VIP photo shoot at Sharon Trueman’s photographic studio, in Astwood Bank. They will enjoy the red carpet treatment on arrival with champagne and a one hour professional studio session. Both mother and daughter will be given a picture in a presentation mount, which they can select from the photos taken.

Gymophobics owner Zoe Cooke said: "The rise in teenage obesity is often the result of less healthy diets and a lack of exercise.

“We support all our members with healthy eating guidance as well as exercise plans based on our 30 minute circuit. Plus, plenty of positive encouragement.”

Being overweight puts young people at risk of serious health problems in later life, including diabetes and heart disease. Teenage obesity also impacts on the person’s emotional wellbeing. Children are often teased, which can lead to low self-esteem, negative body image and depression. However, with the right support and encouragement it is possible to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Those interested in taking part in the Gymophobics promotion should register with the Albert Street gym by May 18.
