SUMMER gets off to a scary start at this year's May Fayre on Headless Cross Community Orchard with a scarecrow competition on Bank Holiday Monday, May 5.

Everyone is invited to bring along a scarecrow to display on Headless Cross Green on Birchfield Road, to be judged at 1.30pm by the orchard's artist in residence Steve Pound.

Mr Pound said, "Don't be a stupid turnip, put on your handsome head and make yourselves a scarecrow. There's a prize for the one that's outstanding in its field. There'll even be a nice cuppa tea and a slice o' cake, so bring along your Aunt Sally. It's as easy as falling in a duck pond."

The event will include Maypole dancing by 2nd Headless Cross Brownies, accompanied by Arrow Valley Brass Band.

Garden enthusiasts are encouraged to bring items to share for the plant swap.

There will also be heavy horses, the Amazing Human Fruit Machine, cider, face painting, and craft, community and food stalls. Although there will lots of food to eat, like wild garlic soup and dandelion coffee, people are encouraged to bring a picnic.

The event runs from 11am until 3pm. See headlessxorchard.org.uk for details.
