Personal health budgets set for roll-out

RESIDENTS with continuing healthcare needs will soon have the chance to take more control of the support and care they receive with a personal health budget.

From April 2014 people with a long-term condition or disability who receive NHS Continuing Healthcare will be able to ask for a personal health budget.

Then from October 2014, people eligible will will get a set amount of money to help pay for care and support.

How the money is spent is planned and agreed between the patient or their representative and local NHS team.

The aim is to give give people who receive NHS Continuing Healthcare - those assessed to have complex health and care needs - more choice and control over their care.

Jo Galloway, executive nurse, Quality and Patient Safety for NHS Redditch and Bromsgrove Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said: “Personal health budgets clearly fit with the future direction of the NHS, an NHS which focuses on quality, integration and gives patients’ more control and choice.

"They allow people to work with the NHS so that they can receive more personal care which fits with an individual's life and offers support that is right for them.

“It’s important to remember that although a personal health budget could help many people, it’s not perfect for everyone."
