AN Oakenshaw woman who bravely gave up her career to re-train in mental health has been presented with a prestigious award.

Following a number of years working across the UK in marketing, Hayley Rogers, 34, decided to radically change direction and study mental health at Worcester University.

Now, after completing the course she has been given the Mark Gibbons Memorial Award.

The accolade was established after the tragic death of Mark in recognition of his inspiration and commitment to making improvements in mental health services and nurse education.

Ms Rogers was chosen by her peers at the end of the course on the basis of three criteria - someone who has been a significant source of support to others in the group, who has always been a champion for the service user's view, and/or has themselves struggled with adversities but has successfully completed the course.

These criteria and the selection process were chosen to reflect what Mark valued in others.

Presenting the award to Ms Rogers Redidtch MP Karen Lumley said it was a fantastic achievement and one that she should be very proud of.
