ALCESTER councillor Mike Gittus is celebrating after Warwickshire County Council’s highways Transport Seminar agreed to fund a safety scheme for the town’s high street.

Coun Gittus has been campaigning for some time to see the speed limit on High Street reduced to 20mph, and the seminar has agreed to fund the project helping to establish the final phase of the safety schemes for the road.

He said: "The work will improve road safety for all road users, because I know that slower speeds mean, less severe casualties in both pedestrians and road users.

"Apart from the road safety issue there is also a benefit to the pleasant shopping experience by reducing speeds and the additional opportunity of drivers and passengers absorbing the retail possibilities as they drive by.

"This scheme will also enable me to continue working towards the reinstatement of an Ancient Market Place in the High Street of an Ancient Market Town."
