FOR the third year running, Redditch borough and Bromsgrove district councils are joining forces to celebrate LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) History Month.

Normally celebrated throughout the month of February, this year the celebrations are starting early with special showings of Blue is the Warmest Colour on January 14 and 16 and Kill Your Darlings on January 26 and 28 January. Both will be shown at Artrix, Bromsgrove.

February 1 sees an afternoon of information and exhibition at Redditch Library including the photographic posters collection Living My Life – Celebrating the Lives of Transgender people. Open from 11am to 3pm in the Level 3 meeting room. Entry is free and there will also be free light refreshments.

Artrix will also be hosting Proud, a photographic exhibition by Jeremy Williams, as well as the headline event, a family friendly film and social evening with a screening of the digitally remastered The Wizard of Oz on February 6.

Bromsgrove Library will also be holding exhibitions and talks to raise awareness of LGBT History Month on the February 11 before the celebrations are finished with the annual ‘Queer Quiz’ from the Sou’Westers on February 26.

Fiona Scott, equality policy officer for Redditch Council, said: “Year on year LGBT History Month is getting bigger, better and even more popular. The theme for 2014 is music which is why we are particularly excited about our headline showing of The Wizard of Oz as it will mark the 75th anniversary of this charming, classic, sing-song family film - the perfect way to celebrate LGBT History Month.”

LGBT History Month is held in February every year in the UK and celebrates and recognises the contribution made to society by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender members of the community.

Information packs about a range of LGBT issues will be available at all council public contact points throughout the month of February.
