Woodrush High School is 'outstanding'

STAFF and pupils from Woodrush Community High School in Wythall are celebrating after the school received an outstanding Ofsted report.

Inspectors highlighted students’ excellent behaviour and great enthusiasm for learning, as well as mentioning how well the headteacher Chris King was supported by the senior staff and governing body.

The report stated: “There is consistency in the high quality of teaching, with much that is outstanding. Teachers plan very well to ensure that students learn actively and tasks are varied and exciting.”

Mr King was thrilled with the result. He said: “Four inspectors spent two days in school observing lessons, talking to students and staff and taking into account a range of information. We were of course delighted to receive the top outstanding grades in all areas they assessed (teaching, behaviour, achievement and leadership).”

The report did highlight several areas with potential for improvement at the school including opportunities occasionally being missed to fully promote students’ independent learning skills, and challenge those of the highest ability.

Suggestions were made for teachers to give students the opportunity to respond to written marking by correcting their mistakes, as well as allowing sixth form students to take more responsibility for their own progress.

However overall teaching, behaviour, achievement and leadership at the school were found to be outstanding.

Mr King added: “The judgements regarding the conduct of our students, the quality of teaching they receive, the way the school is lead at all levels and importantly our students achievement could not have been better and clearly a reflection on all our students, support of parents, carers and of course our staff. This now means that our last three visits from Ofsted have resulted in the top grades being awarded, and congratulations must go to all our community for this outstanding achievement.”
