MP believes Redditch United's plans are a "way forward" for club

THE town’s MP said she believes that plans from Redditch United to move to a new purpose-bulit facility are a “way forward” for the club, which is losing tens of thousands of pounds annually.
The club has revealed plans for a move to a new state-of-the-art purpose built site in Moons Moat as its current facilities, in Bromsgrove Road, have been labelled outdated, and not fit for purpose by chairman Chris Swan, who bought the club in 2011 when it was in liquidation.
It shared its plans with Redditch Council, which owns the land its current and proposed grounds occupy, but the council has said it does not wish to progress the idea, as it has many concerns, following discussions with officers of finance, leisure, planning and property services.
Responding to the reaction of the council to the plans, Karen Lumley MP, said: “Redditch United Football Club is losing a significant sum of money every year with Chris and Sallie Swan investing vast sums plugging the shortfall.
“This is clearly not sustainable and I believe that the council need to look at these proposals again.
“It is my view that these plans offer a way forward for Redditch United and also ensure that more young people are able to get involved playing sports in the town.
“I do understand that there are risks associated with this potential move and therefore I urge Redditch United and the council to work closely together so that a viable solution can be found. A prosperous, financially viable football club is in everyone’s interest.”
The club has also launched an online petition to get support from the public, which has already received hundreds of signatures. To sign it, visit www.petitions24.com/redditch_united_refused_relocation.
