Par-fect event to celebrate golf club's special milestone
4:50pm Friday 11th October 2013 in News
RENOWNED golf commentator Peter Alliss was the guest of honour who recently crowned Redditch Golf Club’s special milestone.
Mr Alliss, 82, is the voice of golf on the BBC and has also designed many golf courses.
With centenary captain Tom Sheldon, he unveiled the club’s centenary clock and then spoke at a dinner to 300 members and guests.
The club’s 100 years were marked with a special two day golf tournament.
Mr Sheldon said: “2013 is not only our centenary year, it is also the year in which local people can come and find out just what a sporting gem they have on their doorstep – a great golf course and a welcome in the clubhouse for one and all.”
The club was founded in 1913 and the opening was marked by an 18 hole exhibition featuring JH Taylor, the Open Champion of that year.
For its first 59 years, the club’s home was the Plymouth Road Pitcheroak golf course, now the town’s municipal course, but the construction of the new Bromsgrove Highway resulted in the course being downsized to its current nine hole form.
The club moved to the present Callow Hill course in 1972.
