Unexpected visitor found in Redditch garden

AN unexpected visitor and rare migrant to the UK has been found in Matchborough East.
While keeping an eye out for the Brown Hairstreak butterfly, part of a campaign by wildlife enthusiasts, one resident found a large and very rare grey moth.
Maurice O'Gorman from Ledbury Close and his wife found the Convolvulus Hawk moth on a peg bag next to their washing line.
While Brown Hairstreaks are relatively small, Convolvulus Hawks can be 7cm or bigger and are one of the largest moths found in Europe.
Mike Williams, from the West Midlands Butterfly Conservation, said the moth lives in Africa but migrates to southern Europe most years to breed.
“To find one as far north as the Midlands is highly unusual and quite a find for a Redditch garden,” he said.
