Redditch man denies indecently assaulting young boy in the 80s

A MAN indecently abused a young boy more than 30 years ago after luring him into his bedroom by promising him toys, a court has heard.
Gerard Drew, aged 59, who is profoundly deaf, appeared before a jury at Worcester Crown Court to face allegations he repeatedly attacked the six-year-old boy in the bedroom of his then-home in Evenlode Close, Redditch, when the youngster would visit with his young friend, a relative of Drew’s, during the early 80s.
Prosecutor Paul Whitfield said Drew, of Southcrest Road, Redditch, would invite the boy upstairs on the "pretext" of getting toys before assaulting him.
In evidence, the alleged victim, who is now 37, told the court the abuse began the very first time he visited Drew's house.
He had previously known Drew's father as the 'Red Indian Man' due to his collection of Native American headdresses, he added.
He said he and his friend had been playing in the front room of the house when Drew's father suggested they go into his room to fetch more toys, which is when the first incident of indecent abuse is alleged to have happened.
Drew appeared with the assistance of a team of six sign language experts, who translate for him and for the court.
He denies five counts of indecently assaulting the six-year-old boy between March 1982 and March 1983 by kissing him and touching him.
The trial continues.
