First large scale Women of Redditch event held

THE bank holiday weekend saw more than 70 women attend the first large scale Women of Redditch event.
Organised by Rebecca Blake, Labour parliamentary spokesman for Redditch, she said the aim was to celebrate the hard work of women across the town and give them a chance to get to know one another better.
Ms Blake said: “Inspired by the longstanding work of the British Asian Women's Group, I have been following in their footsteps in bringing women from different ages and cultures together.
“It's important to me that different Redditch communities do not simply live side by side but have regular opportunities to get to know one another better.
“A small group of us started Women of Redditch last year and our first event was a picnic. One year on, I'm thrilled that support for the idea has been so strong, with this year's vintage themed garden tea party welcoming over 70 women from Redditch. Huge thanks to Cupsadaisy Occasions for doing a sterling job of keeping tea cups full for the afternoon.
“Many people in this town are working hard in the community, however I wanted an occasion to mark the role of women, who are all too often juggling many commitments but still making time to help others. The tea party allowed me to do just that."
Veronica Allen, former community leader and chair of Caribbean Roots Connection, who has recently retired to Jamaica, was back visiting Redditch and said she enjoyed every minute of the event.
Ms Blake added: "With the positive feedback, I am sure Women of Redditch events will continue and I would like to thank all those who attended and helped to raise almost £100 for Worcestershire Women's Aid, which works with women and children affected by domestic violence.”
