DETECTIVES investigating the death of a Redditch man at the weekend have arrested five teenage males on suspicion of murder.

The arrests were made on Sunday afternoon, shortly after the victim was pronounced dead at Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry.

The man who died has been named as 50 year old Nigel Shakespeare who was with his partner when he was attacked while walking home from the Kings Arms pub on Sunday (24 February).

The couple were in Sillins Avenue, Redditch, at approximately 12.25am on Sunday when Mr Shakespeare was assaulted and fell to the ground, hitting his head.

He was taken to the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch and later transferred to Walsgrave Hospital, Coventry, due to his head injury. His life support machine was later turned off.

Detective Inspector Adam Hartwright said: “We are still appealing to the public to come forward if they have any information about this incident. We have had a good response so far and we are piecing together what happened in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“Officers are carrying out house to house inquiries and local police patrols have been stepped up in the Lakeside area of Redditch. We are also viewing CCTV and would urge anyone who has yet to come forward to contact us as soon as possible by calling Redditch CID by 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers 0800 555111.

“We would remind residents that this type of crime is rare in the town and we are working hard to get to the bottom of what happened at the weekend.”

Three of those in custody are aged 17, one is aged16 and the fifth male is aged 18. They are local to the Redditch area.
