YMCA residents evacuated after blaze
11:30am Wednesday 30th January 2013 in News
RESIDENTS at the town’s YMCA, based at Frederick Eary House, had to be evacuated early this morning following a blaze.
Two fire crews from Redditch and one from Bromsgrove were called to the property, in Woodrow, at about 3.10am.
The fire, which is currently being investigated, is believed to have been caused by a fault in an electrical cupboard.
Ashley Hewitt, from the YMCA, said: “I would like the thank the emergency services for their quick response and Redditch Council for their support.
“I’d also like to thank the tenents and the YMCA staff who all acted in a quick and timely manner.”
He added that those evacuated, now staying in a nearby housing block, hope to be able to move back as soon as possible.
The property was taken over by Redditch YMCA and was opened refurbished only last year.
